Grand Rapid Local Movers

Being a single parent presents its own unique set of challenges. There’s so much you have to do and think of. Throw moving into the mix? Well, let’s just say … it’s not easy. But that doesn’t mean that this experience is destined to end in a stress-fueled screaming match. As your Grand Rapids local movers, we’ve picked up a few tips and tricks along the way. Here are our top three.

1.  Think Ahead and Plan Accordingly

You know your household better than anyone, so grab a (big) glass of wine and brainstorm everything that needs to be done. Selling furniture you won’t be taking with you? Enrolling the kids in their new school? Packing up the clothes, dishes, knick-knacks, and décor? As crazy as it sounds, it can all be done.

Once you have your list, decide when each item needs to be completed. For example, you’ll probably pack away the rocking horse your kids never play with before, say, the wine glasses (you’ll still be needing those…).  When you have your order down, find pockets of time in your calendar between the kids’ engagements and your work schedule. Write each and every task at a specified date and time.

You’ll see that with planning, there’s time for it all!

2.  Don’t Go It Alone!

As a single parent, you’re probably used to doing nearly everything yourself. But that doesn’t mean it has to be that way. Maybe you can set up a play date to occupy your kids while you pack; maybe your parents can take the kids for a weekend so you can focus on your to-do list; or maybe your friends can come over and help you sort through your closet. You don’t know until you ask—so ask.

And as far as the moving itself goes, hire a reputable local moving company. That way, you won’t need to worry about lifting heavy furniture, or scheduling the logistics of your move. At Lansing Moving Co, we’ll give you a free in-home estimate and assign you a move coordinator so you won’t have to do the heavy lifting.

3.  Communicate, communicate, communicate!

No matter the ages of your children, moving will be a big transition for them. They may have mixed feelings about leaving friends, starting at a new school, and wondering what the future holds. Keep communication lines open throughout the process. Encourage your children to share their feelings (even if they’re negative), and listen to what they have to say. A simple, “I understand. That must be difficult for you” can make all the difference.
